Pneumoftiziology Institute Prof. Dr. Marius Nasta
The "Filaret" sanatorium and medical unit, founded in 1904 in Bucharest, marked the beginning of the Society for the tuberculosis prophylaxis, founded at the initiative of a physicians group in 1901.
In 1949 becomes the "The Clinical Institute of Ftiziology", a technical consultative body of the Ministry of Health, responsible for elaborating researches and academic studies in all the problems related to tuberculosis and also responsible for orienting the fight against the tuberculosis in Romania.
From the beginning, under the Prof. Dr. Doc. Marius Nasta's management, the Institute organizes its activity in a complex manner having the following directions:
- Scientific research activity,
- Teaching activity,
- Training and coaching the medical staff from all over the country regarding the pulmonary diseases, including the tuberculosis, and
- High quality medical assistance.
Then the communism period arose, when the TB patients hadn't been declared as TB cases (a disease considered to be the privilege to the bad socio-economic conditions).
Thus, the most decrease value of the incidence was registered in 1985: 55,8 %000.Subsequently, in the period following the Revolution, when the recovered freedom meant rejecting any form of constraint and controlling surveillance the anti tuberculosis treatment, registered a significant increase of the TB cases.
In the past years, had also been noticed the extend of the chemo-resistance to anti tuberculosis substances phenomenon. The highest incidence of the cases registered in 2002: 142,2 %000.
Starting with 1997 the Pneumoftiziology Institute Prof. Dr. Marius Nasta coordinates the National Program of Tuberculosis Control, which observes the recommendations from the World Health Organizations.
At this moment, the Marius Nasta Institute offered the benchmarks in tuberculosis control in Romania and guides the activity of some entire generations of specialists in pneumology field. I
n February 2004 was founded the Projects Implementation Unit with The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria grant.
The multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (TB MDR) became a serious problem in the global TB control, sequel to the difficulties in diagnosis and treatment, associated to the increased costs for the TB control programs.
The appearance of the extensively resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB), whose therapeutically results are discouraging, needs intensifying the activities concerted in this area, exactly what id the purpose of the present project implemented by the Institute Prof. Dr. Marius Nasta with the grant from Global Fund within 6th Round.
The project's objectives:
- Organizing and finalising until the end of the project's implementation period, an investigation of surveillance of the chemo-resistance to the anti tuberculosis substances of line 2 based on a protocol elaborated with the technical assistance from WHO;
- Elaborating the GLC application and obtain the approval for continuing the project DOTS- Plus in Romania, until the beginning of the 5th project's implementation trimester;
- Identifying as precocious as possible and setting-up the treatment for at least 160 patients with MDR- TB by continuing the implementation of DOTS- Plus in Romania, until the end of the project's implementation period;
- Ensuring the uninterrupted treatment with anti tuberculosis medicines line 2 for patients with MDR- TB from the DOTS- Plus project's cohort 3;
- Elaborating a guide of the patient with MDR- TB, its multiplication in 800 copies and dissemination, by the end of the 4th project's implementation trimester.
The target group / project's beneficiaries:
- The TB and MDR-TB patients, who will benefit of the diagnosis and quality treatment, anti tuberculosis medicines line 2 and information on the disease;
- The general population, who will be protected by the MDR- TB transmission;
- The National Program of Tuberculosis Control (NPTC), who will benefit of the outcomes from the evaluation investigation of the M. tuberculosis chemo resistance to medicines line 2, in order to tailor the future decisions regarding limiting the TB disease in Romania, and to ensure the medicines for an important cohort of patients whose treatment is expensive, reducing a financial burden;
- The network of bK bacteriology laboratories, which will benefit of an quality evaluation and will participate to a scientific study whose outcomes will have international overtones;
- The scientific speciality community in Romania that will present the results of the investigation as a world premiere in the field, which could be practice model for future researches in the entire world.
