Society of Contraceptive and Sexual Education

Society of Contraceptive and Sexual Education has proposed to itself, even from it's foundation in 1991, to militate for promoting and respecting the right to free access for every person at education for health and to complex services, of high quality and integrated, in the domain of human reproduction health, based on own informed decision.

Founded with the support of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), following a long period of repressive pronatalist policy, SECS is one of the first institutions in Romania that provides family planning information and services for population.Developing a very rich activity, SECS obtained outstanding results. Out of the past 2 years' achievements we can state:

  • 2005: At the end of the year in 75% of Romanian rural communities there were family planning services. At the end of the year there were 2.421 nurses and 4.313 family physicians in FP.
  • 2006: 80% national coverage with reproductive health services through 5.171 physicians trained in Family Planning.

Main activities:

  • The technical assistance for the Ministry of Public Health and the Program's Management Unit in implementing the National Program - Intervention 1/1 of child and family health program - increasing the access to RH services;
  • Nationwide development and implementation of the logistic system of monitoring the distribution of free of charge contraceptive;
  • Elaboration of training programs in Reproductive Health/Family Planning, counselling, inclusive teenagers' counselling, community mobilization, train the trainers in RH/FP;
  • Translation of publishing the reference material in RH/FP;
  • Continuous medical training and education in RH/FP and financial management of the individual medical cabinets for family physicians and nurses;
  • Training the peer educators and community leaders to promote the benefits of the RH/FP within the community;
  • Development of local multi-section groups in order to mobilize the local resources on increasing the access of vulnerable populations to RH/FP information and services - in 11 main cities in Romania;
  • Support for the communities in identifying and solving the reproductive health problems;
  • IEC/BCC campaigns in RH/FP for the general public, HIV/AIDS/STI prevention among youngsters between 15-25 years old;
  • Provide RH/FP services through own network of family planning cabinets.
