Save the Children Organization

The 'Save the Children' Romania is a non-governmental organization founded in 1990. Its mission is to defend children's rights, as stated and defined by the UN's Convention. This prestigious organization is present in 14 Romanian counties. The foundation's personnel is composed by 6,000 members and more than 800 volunteers, most of them young people.

This well-known organization's mission is to defend children's rights and to implement and develop programs dedicated to children. Relevant examples are the campaign against child abuse, and projects that support the labouring, disabled and rroma children's education. Also, the "Save the Children" organization is an active presence in schools being involved in the educational process.

The organization has also set up counselling centres for abused children in Bucharest, Timisoara, Iasi, Targu-Mures and Suceava.

Altogether, Save the Children strives to change and adapt the policies and laws in order to benefit the children, using public opinion influencing campaigns.

During the Global Fund's 6th funding Round, the "Save the Children" organization will implement, within its HIV/AIDS programme, a project focused on HIV prevention among Roma communities in Dambovita, Timis and Vrancea counties. The main activities include:

  • informing the Roma community members - most of them being young people - on the HIV risks and prevention methods
  • editing a billboard and flyer
  • applying questionnaires
  • offering condoms

It is estimated that by the end of the project at least 5000 Roma ethnics in 3 Romanian counties will be better informed.
