Baylor-Black Sea Foundation
The Baylor-Black Sea Foundation was founded by Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative- BIPAI from the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA.
The mission of BIPAI and of the Baylor-Black Sea Foundation is the implementation of a program with a strong qualitative and ethical impact, aimed on:
- provision of care and treatment for people infected and affected by HIV
- training of professionals in the domain of health regarding HIV/AIDS
- clinical research in the HIV/AIDS domain.
As results from the foundation's mission, the programs developed respond to the following objectives:
- ensuring psychological assistance for young people affected by HIV,
- training of the professionals through the Medical Education Program
- provision of medical care (pneumoftisiology, gynecology /family planning and dentistry) which make the medical department of the foundation but also the education of the community regarding the infection with HIV.
These objectives are complemented by involving of volunteers in educational activities developed in the schools from Constanta county and also by organizing special events in the community with the occasion of the Memorial Day of Lighted Candles and the Day of 1st of December.
The community is also approached by the program of Counseling and Rapid HIV Testing launched in October 2007 in Constanta and Tulcea.
Another program is the complex of family-type houses - the Flowers' House and the Baylor Habitat House. This project aims the development of independent life skills in 7 young people infected with HIV, orphans or lacking familial support in the locality Lazu.
As a result of the quality of services offered by the foundation and due to the partnership with the Infectious Disease Hospital in Constanta, this partnership was recognized within BIPAI network as a Center of Excellence (May 2007).
The projects developed with funds from the Global Fund of Fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria through Romanian Angel Appeal Foundation have been designed for the improvement of psychological assistance services, taking into account the changing needs of the beneficiaries.
Thus, the Foundation develops two projects centered on activity of counseling on two domains of big interest for the young men affected by HIV:
- education for a healthy life centered on the approach of some themes of familial planning type, infections with sexual transmission, elements of sexuality, consume of substances and orientation/school;
- professional integration.
The individual and group counseling activities target 430 young people infected with HIV, 230 of them being included in counseling activities and 200 being provided with professional orientation.
