ALIAT Association
Founded in 1993, ALIAT (Alianta pentru Lupta Impotriva Alcoolismului si Toxicomaniilor) represents an association of professionals in mental health field.
ALIAT is designed as an environment for meetings, communication and actions made in common by people, institutions and organizations that are interested/involved in combating the alcohol and drug addiction. Starting with 1999, the organization carries out and develops activities in regard with prevention and treatment of diseases connected to the use of substances.
The programs initiated by ALIAT have been representing the same pioneer actions in the field of psychoactive substances usage:
- the first project of primary prevention of use of drugs in schools based on peer educators networks -peer education (IN-DEPENDENT);
- the first program pf syringes exchange for the injectable drug users (MINIMUM RISK);
- the first program of post-universitary and multidisciplinary professional training for professionals who had already activated in services targeted for psychoactive substances users (CONTINUOUS EDUCATION IN ADDICTIONS FIELD);
- publishing the first Romanian Guide for Treatment in Case of Psychoactive Substances Abuse and furthermore, editing more publications on professional training targeted for the community of professionals activating in services for substances users;
- The Ambulatory Centre of evaluation and treatment of problems connected to the alcohol usage (ALCOHELP).
Under the Round 6 of Global Fund, Aliat will implement the activities contained in the "MINIMUM RISK" PROJECT:
The purpose of this project is to improve the health status of injectable drug users (IDUs) from Bucharest and to prevent their injection with HIV through prevention activities and harm reduction associated with the psychoactive substances use.
So that the proposed objective could be reached, the following activities will be carried out through out-reach interventions:
- Syringes exchange and providing other sterile injectable equipment;
- HIV testing;
- References to other services;
- HIV/AIDS informative sessions;
- Psychological counseling sessions.
The activities will be carried out in many areas/districts of Bucharest and will be accompanied by:
- dissemination of informative materials;
- information for the users' families;
- psychological and legal counseling sessions for IDU.
The expected results include:
- Increase by 200% of the IDUs who have access to the syringes exchange programs (currently ALIAT provides services for approx. 1.000 injecting drug users);
- Increase of the information level and knowledge of the safe use behaviors, STIs, HIV prevention, etc;
- Increase of collected and disseminated number of syringes;
- Improvement of the IDUs' access to the targeted services.
