Conference "Advocacy for implication" organized by RAA Foundation at the House of Parliament

May 7th, 2009

On May 6th, 2009, at the Parliament Palace took place the "Pleading for involvement" Conference organized by Romanian Angel Appeal Foundation.

The event that enjoyed the High Patronage of the Deputy Chamber's Chairwoman, Mrs. Roberta Anastase, brought together representatives of the civil society, high-level medical institutions, specialist deputies and members of the Deputy Chamber of Parliament.

The objective of this first meeting was to initiate an open and efficient dialogue between all the involved decision makers. The goal stands for improving the control and spread of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis infections, diseases that represent major public health problems at and internationally and European level.Considering that every third TB case from EU comes from Romania, after 19 years when Romania was considered the country with the highest number with HIV/AIDS infected children, the two diseases continue to represent a serious threat for our country's population to the health status.

People's migration, neighboring with countries where the incidence of the two diseases highly overcomes the European average, increase of the TB multidrug-resistant (MDR-TB) and of the injection drug users, all these can have Romania in the position of not controlling the two diseases.

The conference work papers where opened by Mrs Rodica Nassar, President of the Health and Family Public Health Commission, by Dr. Silvia Asandi, General Director of RAA Foundation, and also by Mr. Prof. Dr.Aurel Nechita, Secretary of State in Public Health Ministry.

During the workshops and the discussions had been drawn some recommendations which stand for:

  • improving the legal frame of HIV/AIDS and TB,
  • the necessity of active involvement of the local and central authorities in prevention, treatment and support interventions financed by Global Fund paying attention to programs aimed for vulnerable groups
  • additional funds allocation sufficient for prevention programs
  • starting the sub-recipient process of the NGOs as social-medical services providers, etc.

Moreover, within the conference it was distributed as a premiere in Romania, the "Guideline for Member of Parliament", containing information and statements on the practice method the member of Parliament can get involved in the two diseases' control process.

All these conclusions and recommendations, which will get materialized in action and intervention directions, are to be found in the Conference Report that RAA Foundation will shortly issue for all the attendees and involved decision makers.
