COPAC and UNOPA are highlighting the crisis of ARV medication for HIV infected patients

January 29th, 2009

The Coalition of Organizations for Chronic Diseases Patients (COPAC) points out the Health Ministry the keen lack of medicines as a sequel of imports and distribution blocking.

COPAC, the coalition where the National Union of Organizations of Persons Infected/Affected by HIV/AIDS (UNOPA) is a part of represents the biggest organization in Romania fighting for defending and promoting the rights of chronic diseases patients.

As a sequel of the existent blocking of provisions and distribution in pharmacies of the import medicines, a significant percentage of chronic patients in Romania find themselves in the impossibility to purchase the necessary medicines and to continue the prescribed treatment.

The situation for HIV/AIDS people is even worse as any interruption of the treatment systems can cause aggravation of symptomatology and a new evolved phase of the disease.

The discussions' solution that are on the import medicines procurement and distribution cost is likely to be offered too late for some of the HIV/AIDS patients. In this way, the fight with the disease - a hard and endurance fight - could be lost.

These are the reasons for which COPAC and UNOPA requests the Ministry of Health to ensure the continuity of the treatment for the chronic patients whose life depends on these medicines, independent and no matter the status of solving the current situation.

Moreover, it is requested a direct meeting of the representatives of chronic patients and the Health Minister, Mr. Ion Bazac, in order to urgently identify a solution for the situation that we face.
