Events organized at Bucharest to celebrate HIV/AIDS World Day

As every year, December 1st is an international symbol with a powerful resonance: celebrating the World AIDS Day.

The Romanian HIV/AIDS Centre, National Committee to Fight AIDS through Pneumoftiziology Institute Prof. Dr. Marius Nasta, in partnership with the National Union of Organizations of People Infected / Affected by HIV/AIDS (UNOPA), organizations and institutions actively involved in the fight against this disease marked the World AIDS Day through a series of events.

The events took place in the Big Lobby of the HIV/AIDS Academy and included presentations, press conference, interviews and short reports on HIV/AIDS status worldwide and Romania. Among these events there was also an exhibition with exhibition stalls for the organizations that carry out and develop interventions in this area.

Each organization's stall presented the decorating objects made in the protected plants by the HIV youngsters. Besides the decorating objects, the organizations presented its leaflets, brochures and other informative materials.

At the end of the event, the human ribbon, to which all those present participated to, highlighted once again the involvement and determination of the present organizations and institutions to continue their efforts to HIV/AIDS prevention and control.The event's guests and journalists had the occasion to get familiar with the evolution trends of this disease, the HIV/AIDS prevention and control trends and also with the programs that aim the social and professional integration of those over 6.000 HIV youngsters lining in Romania.

The HIV/AIDS prevention and control represent and will continue to represent one of the worldwide public health priority. In this respect, all the efforts were focused on reaching one of the Millennium Development Objective: ensuring the universal access to services and activities of prevention, treatment, care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS.

The HIV Report in 2008, launched on November 24th by UNAIDS and World Health Organization (WHO) underlines once again the strategic importance that prevention programs and interventions should be subject to, together with the specialty treatment.

One of the most important conclusions of this report is precisely the fact that the impact of the reaction towards HIV/AIDS is powerful in the countries where the treatment and prevention programs were integrated in a strengthen network of sanitary and social services."The good news is that we have proofs that these decreasing infection rates are mostly subject to the HIV prevention programs", states in this Report, dl Michel Sidibe, UNAIDS General Director.
