Save the Children Romania Organizes IEC Activities in Vulnerable Communities
6th of March 2008
Save the Children Romania (www.salvaticopiii.ro) is going on with it's IE activities (Informing and Educating activities) in the purpose of preventing HIV/STI transmission.
Addressing once again to the vulnerable and disadvantaged population, the organization has oriented this time it's interventions towards poor communities, without material resources.
One of those communities is I.L. Caragiale village, located in Dambovita County. The population encounters aprox. 1,300 rroma persons, whom are living at the out-skirt of the village, with a difficult access.
Roads are in a very poor condition, with a desperate need to be covered with bitumen or at least with stones or peebles.
The population is very poor, most of the adults being unemployed and facing difficult material conditions.
Despite this situation, the interest for HIV/STI prevention and even for preventing undesirable pregnancies is increasing.
In those conditions, the projects developed by Save the Children are more than necessary, their intervention being welcomed.
Based on their remarkable previous experience on working with disadvantaged communities, Save the Children has organized, first, training sessions for the networks of rroma mediators, communitarian assistants, rroma local leaders and volunteers.
Rroma mediator Ion Simona and also Marta Dragomir, a communitarian assistant, were among the first to take part at the meeting organized with the community members. Till now over 60 young people were informed about the risks of HIV/AIDS transmission.
Save the Children's activities are in course and this intervention model will be replicate in other disadvantaged communities, most of them with poor, rroma population.
