2008 International HIV/AIDS Conference

The XVIIth edition of the HIV/AIDS Conference will take place in Mexico City during August 3rd -8th.
The event, which stands as a premiere for the Latin America, will have as a theme the "Universal Action Now ".The current edition, organized after 2 years from the last meeting of this kind, will offer the opportunity to present the last progresses made by the scientific researches and to debate the major problems of interest for the HIV/AIDS area. A special focus will be on facilitating the experience exchange and to promote the best practice models.
The International HIV/AIDS Conference represents the most important forum of approaching this disease, with over 20.000 participants, among who are 2.500 journalists all over the world. Choosing the Latin America for organizing this reunion has as purpose better information on HIV and its impact in the entire region.
The whitepapers of the Conference will be supervised by a Coordination Commission (CC), composed by not only the representatives of the people living with HIV but also physicians, researches, experts in public health, community experts and other parts involved in HIV/AIDS designed programs. The committee members identified already most of the key problems that will be submitted for debate.
The three Coordination Committees of the programs (for the scientific, community and leadership fields), will closely collaborate under the supervision of the CC for applying the proposed objectives. Some of the topics that are to be approached are also:
- Health systems strengthening, service models, integration with TB, STIs, co-infections, maternal health, long-term care, mental health, palliative care, drug resistance, harm reduction, primary health care, hepatitis C, etc.;
- Approaching specific regional issues, setting regional policy agendas tailored to the problems specific for each geographic area and region, facilitating the experience exchange;
- Synergy of treatment and prevention; treatment as a tool for prevention (reducing viral load and infectivity);
- Respect and promotion of human rights as a framework for all aspects of the response offered by HIV/AIDS.
Our country will be represented by different institutions and organizations' representatives who will try to present both the obtained results and the difficulties encountered in applying prevention, treatment and support programs designed for HIV/AIDS.
