The Association of Chronically-ill Patients

The Association of Chronically-ill Patients

23rd of April, 2008

In Romania, the number of patients suffering from chronic diseases is unfortunately increasing during the last years.

That is why their sufferance, special needs related to the treatment, care and support must represent a constant preoccupation for the entire community.

Frequently there were described situations of neglecting or ignoring the rights of chronically ill patients, all those leading to emphasised difficulties.

This is one of the reasons for whom last days was founded the Association of Chronically Ill Patients from Romania (ACPR).

Representing a novelty for our country, this association puts together nongovernmental organizations of chronically ill patients, conferring them more consistency and credibility in their dialogue with the Ministry of Public Health (MOH).

The newly founded coalition counters over 1.5 million patients suffering of cancer, diabetes, rare diseases, haemophilia, HIV/AIDS and also patients who have received transplants.

" The purpose of this coalition is to improve patients' rights, to modernize and update the technical support, to develop screening programs and to open new hospitals. We want care and support at European standards for our chronically ill patients", said Cezar Irimia, the Chair of ACPR.

The Association will fight for patients' rights: at prevention, equal access at treatment and medical care, information, confidentiality, high quality care and support, personalized therapeutically treatment, administrated at time.

At the opening conference also took part the Minister of Public Health, Mr. Eugen Nicolaescu, who has underlined that MOH is open to constantly collaborate and communicate with the patients and that the decisions regarding their medical assistance will be taken only after consulting the representants of the patients involved.

Another important issue approached by the Minister was related to MOH's intention to change and adapt the modality of establishing the handicap degrees and also the procedure for handicap quantum.

We finish by wishing to the newly founded Association good luck, ensuring it about our support in representing the rights of chronically ill patients!
